The beginning

I started LeZ in 2012

After I graduated in 2009, I studied singing in Copenhagen for 4 months at the Complete Vocal Institute. I knew I wanted to have my own business before I started my education. I always said I wanted to get 2 years experience as a speech pathologist specialized in the voice, before I started my own private practice. And exactly that happend. After working for a while I started bicycling in Amsterdam, pondering where I would like my business to be. I found a place, but it was to expensive. A few months later I saw they were reconstructing the place. I walked in the place and happen to meet the owner of the building. He told me they were opening a medical centre and I would be a perfect fit and best of all I could decide how much I would like to pay! That's how I found the perfect location in the city center of Amsterdam.

In the meantime I was traveling the world dancing…

As a kid I loved dancing, and became quite good at it. But I hated to be seen! I hated the spotlight. I made myself invisible, so I stopped dancing for 10-15 years. And then I saw Lindy Hop. It was love at first sight. It was such a happy dance, improvising on jazz music, no judgement, just play. It was like life. I could let go and just enjoy playing with the music, being together and have way too much fun that being seen didn't matter anymore. There wasn’t a lot of dancing in the Netherlands, so I travelled the world almost every weekend. I even joined competitions internationally and even won. That was the start of me opening up.

It changed me

I loved it so much, that I didn’t care if people saw me. I didn’t even think about it. I was having too much fun. I started winning international competitions, teach abroad and perform at different festivals like Down The Rabbit Hole, TV MAX and danced in different music video’s. When you love what you do, all your worries just melt away. It really changed me for the greater. It was the first step of truly enjoying life and living.

Finding my voice...

That has not been an easy journey. As a kid I’ve been sexually abused. The only way to survive I knew then, was to shut up and pretend it didn’t happen. I was so good at it, I suppressed it to a point where I didn’t even remember it. It had a purpose. I wanted to see my family happy. Sharing this wouldn’t make anyone happy. So I shoved it out of my existence. Until I couldn’t any longer. In court against my uncle, I finally spoke up and I was so proud of myself for the first time. I’ll make a podcast about this soon, until then you can read my story in this interview…
